Importance of Water

Our Lewis & Daggett team has consciously focused our combined efforts to protect our environment. Perhaps the most important component of our environment is water. Water is essential for our existence and our health.

Water is vital to the proper functioning of the human body and true health cannot occur without proper hydration. The organs of the human body greatly depend upon water to allow for nutrients to be absorbed and to perform to their optimum capacity.

Water also energizes every cell in the body; without enough water, which contains oxygen, cells would begin to stop functioning. If we become dehydrated, then the body begins to ration water to each organ. The brain, of course being the most important organ, gets the most water. Skin being the least important gets the least amount of water. Your body may be trying to tell you something if you suffer from dry skin, dandruff, or asthma.

The human body also needs water to regulate its body temperature, protect joints and organs and to remove wastes. You need water to help digest your food and it also aids in urination. It also helps to fight off illness as it is a part of the lymphatic fluids in your body.

You should maintain hydration by drinking a minimum of half of your body weight in ounces each day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 ounces of water. Regular hydration is important, since the human body incurs water loss through urination, respiration, and by sweating. People that are active lose more water than those that are sedentary.

       Did you know:

    • Your body is made up of approximately 70% water.
    • That the human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and the lungs are 90%.
    • You get about 20% of the water you need from the foods that you eat.
    • Research reveals that by drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day one could significantly decrease back and joint pain for at least 80% of sufferers.
    • That by drinking a minimum of 5 glasses of water daily you decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79% and the development of bladder cancer by 50%.
    • One glass of water deters hunger pains for most dieters.
    • Metabolism may be slowed down as much as 3% with even mild dehydration.
    • The biggest contributor of daytime fatigue is the lack of water.
    • That at least 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

Please join us in protecting and recognizing the importance of water.
