Team Appreciation
We are proud of our team at Lewis & Daggett. This past week we held our annual Employee Appreciation Week, which includes some extra fun, a few surprises, and ended with a Saturday cookout for everyone and their families.

2009 L & D Volleyball Champs
One of the traditions that has developed over the last several years is the annual volleyball tournament. The winning team is pictured above. The event is fun for those who play, and the spectators as well. It is fun enjoying the friendly competition, the fellowship, and enjoying each others’ families.

Smart Decisions Year Round
Our students are making smart decisions year round! Our Lewis & Daggett team spent some time with a group of local high school students last week as part of our fall Safe Sober Prom Night efforts. Wow, are they impressive!

As impressive as our students are, we are also starkly reminded of the need for continuing, including year round, encouragement and support.

A Great Loss
Losses in our communities hurt us all. We feel the pain collectively and individually. Last week our whole State of North Carolina, and beyond, hurt with the tragic loss of Elena Shapiro.
Elena Bright Shapiro
November 14, 1988 – September 11, 2009
Elena grew up in our community and was perhaps best known as a dancer. She was talented, hard working, and beautiful. Elena graced the stages of our Triad area and beyond for many years, even though she was so young. Most recently, she was sharing her grace and talent with an expanded audience through the Carolina Ballet.

A Servant Heart
This past weekend at a church synod conference the term "servant heart" was used. We are fortunate to live in a community where so many people have "a servant heart." Service to our clients and the community is part of our culture at Lewis & Daggett.

Even during these difficult economic times our communities tend to come together. Interestingly, some charitable organizations and agencies are actually reporting that they are doing well. Several are even on the increase! That is a tribute to all of us.

Importance of Water
Our Lewis & Daggett team has consciously focused our combined efforts to protect our environment. Perhaps the most important component of our environment is water. Water is essential for our existence and our health.

Water is vital to the proper functioning of the human body and true health cannot occur without proper hydration.

Healthy Nutrition
What do you eat? What we eat and proper nutrition is important in everyday life. As part of our Lewis & Daggett culture of internal and personal development we recently had a nutrition presentation for our team. So, it seems like a good time for a nutrition review.

Exercise is only part of the formula in developing an active, healthy lifestyle. Folks often kid themselves that they can eat more if they exercise.

Back To School Safety
Schools all around the Triad start back this week. The school systems in Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, and Statesville all are ready for school to start! Please join our Lewis & Daggett team in reviewing a few safety tips for this new school year.

First, let’s all be aware that traffic will be a little heavier this week. We all need to pay a little closer attention and use our very best driving skills to avoid an accident. Please be sure to be particularly careful around school busses.

Lawn Mowing Safety
Lawn mowing safety is a topic that has been in our recent news following the lawn mowing accident of Appalachian State's star quarterback, Armanti Edwards. Edwards slipped on a hill while mowing and cut his foot. Additionally, our Lewis & Daggett team was consulted this past week regarding a severe injury sustained when a mower threw a rock. Let’s review a few safety tips for the use of lawn mowers.

Every year, approximately 68,000 Americans are injured in lawnmower accidents

Texting While Driving
Text messaging is a relatively new and very fast-growing method of communication. While it certainly has its advantages, texting while driving can be extremely dangerous.

Recently while traveling around the Triad working in our Lewis & Daggett offices it was surprising to observe the number of drivers who appeared to be texting while driving.

Swim Safety
There has been a number of swimming related tragedies and instances in the news this summer. Accordingly, it seems appropriate to review some basic swim safety rules.

First, it is important to understand that although swimming is very enjoyable, it can also be very dangerous and even potentially fatal. Each year in the United States there are close to 4,000 fatal unintentional drownings. That equals approximately ten deaths per day!
Always obey pool rules. Walk, don’t run, around a pool area. Make sure that the depth of the water is appropriate for your youngsters just learning to swim.
